Apple Pie Poppers gets straight to the point: all the cozy flavor of apple pie packed into a fun bite-size dessert. It earns its spot on the Thanksgiving table. Around here, the food matters, but so does what happens once it gets to the table. I want recipes that give people a reason to sit down, hang out, laugh a little louder and stay longer than they planned. If everybody is reaching back into the plate before dinner is technically over, you did it right. If you are looking for a dessert that feels worth making without turning the kitchen into a project, Apple Pie Poppers fits the bill. I am a big believer that the best recipes earn a place in your rotation because you actually want to make them again, not because they look impressive on paper. This is food for real kitchens and real tables: plenty of flavor, room to make it your own, and no need to stress over perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 golden delicious diced
  • 1 Granny Smith diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla paste
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 lemon juiced
  • 1/2 tbsp corn starch
  • 1/2 tbsp water
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered Sugar

Instructions

  • Heat a pan over medium heat and melt the butter. Once melted add the diced apples. When the apples are coated, add the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla. Cook for 5-8 minutes until the apples are coated and softened.
  • Next add the lemon juice along with the cornstarch slurry (corn starch and water mixed). Stir for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens. Then remove the apples from the heat, and let them cook completely.
  • When you’re ready to make the poppers, add about 1-2 teaspoons of apples to the center. Wet the sides with water, then close the wonton wrapper like a book and seal the edges.
  • Heat oil to 350°, then carefully add the poppers. Cook for about 2 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and set aside to slight cool and for excess oil to drain.
  • Plate and top with copious amounts of powdered sugar!
